Khabib "The Eagle" Nurmagomedov is the most dominant mixed martial arts fighter that has stepped foot into the octagon. Ever since he made his mma debut in 2008 recording a win by triangle choke, he has only officially lost one round in his total of 29 fights. I mention this because this fact separates him from your other contenders for GOAT status. We've seen Jon Jones escape with razor thin decisions, seen Georges St. Pierre get knocked out and finished, and we witnessed Demetrious Johnson lose his belt after he was thought to be unstoppable. "The Eagle" walks away from his fights without even a scratch on his face. The most we have seen him hurt was against Michael Johnson where he clipped Khabib with a left hand. Personally, I believe commentator Joe Rogan blew this out of proportion. There was no doubt Johnson hit him clean, but rather I think it was the fact that was the first time anybody has ever landed on him. Moreover, many people will give the argument that Khabib has not defended his belt enough to be considered the GOAT over the likes of GSP or Jon Jones. That makes a bit of sense and to completely ignore that argument would be ignorant. But, let's just quickly analyze the talent each GOAT contender faced during their title runs. Starting with Jon Jones, one could argue majority of the legends he beat were past their primes. Even more, their skill sets would most likely not be successful in today's mma. Not to discredit their talents, but just recognizing how far the sport has come with new techniques like the calf kick. On the other side, GSP was fighting the same people multiple times. Also, the level of competition he faced is not close to what Khabib has faced. Back when GSP was champ yes guys like Carlos Condit, Nick Diaz, Johnny Hendricks were at the top of the rankings. However, the names of Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje quickly silence any argument that Khabib has not defended the title enough. He finished McGregor, Poirier, Gaethje with ease and in the most challenging weight class 155. Where GSP had to fight the same opponents multiple times, Khabib beat his opponents so bad it wouldn't make sense to match them up again. While Jon Jones has been barely passing by with decisions, Khabib takes it out of the judges hands and submits his opponents. Has there ever been another fighter who has only lost one round in 29 professional fights? When Khabib takes you down you better hope he puts you to sleep like Justin rather than cranking your neck like Conor because this man is made of steel.
